The Bauakademie reconstruction project focused on addressing how damaged historical buildings should be restored—whether through exact replicas of the original structure or by embracing opportunities for transformation. In this case, a hybrid approach was taken.
The exterior of the Bauakademie was meticulously reconstructed to mirror its original form before its destruction during World War II. However, the interior was reimagined to serve new purposes. The design incorporated modern elements, transforming the interior into a space that hosts exhibitions and an investigative research center.
The first two floors are primarily dedicated to exhibition spaces, while the second floor integrates an archive and research facility. Although the interior has been completely redesigned, the spatial layout respects the original grid-like geometry of Schinkel’s design, ensuring a continuity between the past and present in the distribution and organization of spaces.
